Innovation Pavilion (IP) has added an innovative spin-off company to its Denver South-based business ecosystem. Led by entrepreneurs Steve Lopez and Eesha Sheikh, “Playpal” creates technological tools via smartphones and tablets that empowers adolescents to take control of their own health while doing what they already love, playing video games.

Their ultimate mission is prevention and reversal of childhood obesity by utilizing technology to effect a behavioral change in an adolescent’s health. Recently, Playpal finished the digital gamification of O’Brien Park, which is part of the Town of Parker’s visionary plan to set the foundation for a successful and vibrant downtown. Parker residents benefit from an improved park experience thanks to one-of-a-kind connected technology.

After a successful trial phase, Playpal and the Town of Parker are hosting a public launch of the project on May 6, 2017 at 1 p.m. in O’Brien Park.

Innovation Pavilion-Olathe 21st Century playgrounds takes off at Black Bob Park

Olathe, Kansas, April 27, 2017. Innovation Pavilion-Olathe 21st Century playgrounds takes off at Black Bob Park. Following the steps of O’Brien Park in Parker, Colorado, Olathe is implementing its phase 1 of the project, which is the installation of ‘Internet of Things’ devices/sensors to determine what parts of the parks are most popular.

On Thursday April 27, IP-Olathe had the installation of the sensors. We have received confirmation that the installation was successful. According to Steve Lopez, Playpal, “We are receiving data and we are working on filtering the data out so that we can make sure everything is being measured properly. This is a minor finishing point but it looks as though the install was a success”.

By the end of May, 2017, it is expected to have park usage data. IP-Olathe is looking forward to the gamification of the park and its utilization as well as working with IP partners Aetna, Under Armor to bring the next generation of parks and playgrounds to the city.

In the Venture Capital World, investors most often gravitate to companies and products that you can’t physically touch because they are in “the cloud” and are infinitely scalable at a low cost or are medical products that command huge profits. While this makes sense, as these models are highly scalable and can deliver the returns necessary for angel investing, there’s something rewarding about being able to touch, feel and smell a product and say “I invested in that.”

This event aims to turn that idea on its head as we explore companies and products that are on the “edge of venture.” These products can take advantage of blended financing options that allow for fast growth and high returns while keeping down equity dilution. Venture investments don’t have to be just tech anymore!
