Olathe, KS

Olathe is one of the most populous cities in Kansas and nationally identified as among the most desirable places to live in the central United States. Growing and sustaining economic development has been the name of the game for the city, with new innovations and business sprouting regularly. Innovation Pavilion is proud to be a harbinger of progress and wealth for this exciting community.

The playground is making a comeback. It’s teaming with technology to draw kids away from the couch and reward them for healthy habits.

Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past thirty years. Today, about one third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese. Unfortunately, these children are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease and prediabetes. They may also face psychological challenges, such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem.

But fighting childhood obesity can be fun, and it is with IoT Parks by our non-profit Playpal. By putting sensors in playgrounds, we can discover when and where kids play the most, all while respecting privacy by keeping data aggregate. We’ve already started at playgrounds in Parker, Colo. and Olathe, Kan., where we are learning how to encourage kids to get out and play.

Even more, we’re working on ways for kids can track their activity and get rewards for passing milestones. Imagine kids going to playgrounds and logging their play, so they can receive gifts from sponsor companies. When health becomes a game, kids will become champions of fitness.
